Enjoy this unique twist on a classic Easter treat with some butter, marg, or simply by themselves piping hot straight from the oven. Hot cross donuts, they're as mouth-watering as they sound! Get baking!
Refined sugar free, GF, DF, nut free, and vegan
Makes 8-9 donuts
1 pouch Maca Cinnamon donut mix
2 teaspoons mixed spice
¼ teaspoon ground cloves
½ teaspoon chilli flakes (optional)
¼ Cup mixed fruit
Rind and juice of one orange
¼ Cup melted coconut oil
1 Cup water
¼ Cup buckwheat flour
¼ Cup water
1 Tablespoon melted coconut oil
Preheat oven to 180oC.
Place the mixed fruit, rind, and juice of the orange into a saucepan. Heat on a medium heat for 15 minutes (add a splash or two of water if the orange juice boils away). Set aside and leave to sit for 30 minutes until cool.
Prepare your donut (or muffin) tray by greasing it with coconut oil. Pour the Maca Cinnamon pouch into a bowl, and add the mixed spice, cloves, and chilli flakes if you’re using them. Whisk to blend. Once the fruit has cooled, add it along with the coconut oil and water to the bowl. Mix until blended. Pour the mixture into your donut tray, and bake for 20 minutes. Make the crosses by mixing all the ingredients together. Place the mixture into a piping bag and pipe the crosses onto your donuts. Put the hot cross donuts back into the oven for another 5 minutes.
