What are functional foods?

Great question! Functional foods are foods that have a positive effect on your health, beyond that of their basic nutritional properties. For example they might reduce inflammation, protect against cancer, or reduce your chances of heart diseases. All of Unrefined Cakery's products have functional foods in them. How do I compost the pouches?

Simply pop them in your compost bin and watch the magic happen! They will take about 16 weeks to fully break brown. To learn how to make your own compost system, click here.

Why are you called Unrefined Cakery?

My husband and I chose the name Unrefined Cakery as the ingredients in my products are "unrefined" and thus contain many of the nutrients and goodness that they start out with. This makes them much better for your health than your typical highly refined ingredients such as white flour and sugar! 

What's different about Unrefined Cakery?

Instead of just removing common allergens like gluten and nuts and replacing them with nutritionally devoid flours, Unrefined Cakery has focused on including functional ingredients that are beneficial for the body and have a potentially positive impact on your health. The health of the environment is considered too by utilizing compostable packaging! In addition, the baking mixes are easier to make than other baking mixes.

How easy are your products to make?

Very easy! All you need to do is add oil and water, and then bake. One of  the concerns I had with healthy baking is that many healthy recipes are quite complicated - I've worked hard to create products that are easy to make for your convenience and delight! 


Can I substitute anything for coconut oil?

Yes, you can substitute coconut oil for olive oil, avocado oil, canola oil, or any other vegetable oil.


Are your products gluten free, dairy free, and nut free?

Yes! Part of my philosophy is that everyone should be able to enjoy cake, regardless of their dietary requirements. All my products are free from gluten, dairy, and nuts so you can enjoy them without worry. We have a very strict allergen management plan to ensure we are constantly doing our best to keep you healthy and safe.


Are your products vegan?

Yes, and you don't even need to make any complicated substitutions. Just make the mix as per packet instructions and you have yourself a deliciously healthy vegan treat! 


What do you use instead of sugar?

Currently we have chosen to use coconut sugar, which is a very versatile natural sweetener produced from the dried sap of coconut palm flowers. It retains many of the nutrients found in the coconut palm, such as iron, zinc, calcium and potassium. Coconut sugar has a lower glycemic index (35) compared to regular white sugar (65) meaning that it doesn't spike your blood sugar levels like white sugar does. It's not a perfect sweetener, but in our humble opinion it's much better than the empty calories of refined sugar! 


If I order online, how soon will my package turn up?

We aim to ship orders within 24 hours, and orders made between Monday-Thursday should take 1-2 days to turn up. However if you order on a Friday your order will not be picked up by the courier until Monday.
