Carbohydrates: Not all bad!

Carbs! It’s a word (and food) that we all love to hate. I want to quickly outline why low carb diets are a pet peeve of mine (mind you, no judgement here – I’m all for the freedom of individuals to choose their own way).

Low carbohydrate diets very rarely distinguish between complex carbs and simple carbs. It is an important distinction! Complex carbohydrates are an important part of the diet – they are made up of bigger molecules and take longer for the body to absorb, therefore keeping you fuller for longer and preventing blood sugar spikes. Complex carbs are rich in fibre and nutrients, and have other health benefits such as lowering cholesterol and improving heart health. The fibre in complex carbs is not easily digested by the body, meaning it bulks up your stool and helps everything pass through the intestine easily! In short, carbs are not all bad. In fact a lot of carbs are very good for you!

Here are some great complex carbs that should be consumed on a regular basis:

Fruits and veges (sounds obvious doesn’t it!): Carrots, zucchini, beans, onions, bananas, apples, pears…

Wholegrain foods such as oats, brown rice, buckwheat (we use buckwheat flour in our mixes!)

Nuts and Legumes, like chickpeas, lentils, cashew nuts, walnuts, brazil nuts…
